Knowledge Zone Six Sigma as a Component of Excellence in World Class Manufacturing and OEE Improvement

Continuing our exploration of OEE and Manufacturing Efficiency, the topics covered in more detail at ImFactory Knowledge Zone, let’s delve into a concept closely associated with these areas – Six Sigma. But what exactly is Six Sigma?

In simplest terms, 6σ is a methodology focused on ensuring and improving quality. It involves the identification of defects in processes to minimize variability, recognized as one of the major sources of losses.

Many may associate Six Sigma with statistics. While it is an oversimplification, it is not entirely inaccurate. Various statistical tests are employed to verify hypotheses and assess process stability.

Therefore, what does it mean to implement Six Sigma? Rather than framing it as implementation, it’s more fitting to say that we have achieved the 6σ level, signifying that our processes yield no more than 3.4 defect per million opportunities.

This level of quality assurance is prevalent in the most demanding environments, including critical infrastructure, automotive, and aviation (with a focus on passenger safety, not necessarily luggage).

For most industries, achieving 3 or 4 sigma is considered satisfactory. It is worth mentioning that a 99% quality level defines World Class Manufacturing, equivalent to approximately 3.4 sigma.
